Frequently Asked Questions

If you think that your household is experiencing a power outage, try contacting a neighbor or check to see if streetlights are on. If it is evident that there is a problem beyond your own home, you can call the electric generating plant at (330) 343-3442 to report the outage. You can also call the Electric Field Office from 7:30 to 4 at (330) 343-6542 or the Utility office from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at (330) 343-7725. Electricity can cause death or serious injury. Always use extreme caution around power lines. Never attempt electric work in or around your home (or anyone else's) unless you are trained and have good knowledge of working safely with electricity. Never substitute electrical parts without being certain that the substitution is safe. If your electricity is shut off for any reason, DO NOT attempt to reconnect service yourself. To do so is not only extremely unsafe; it is also against the law. You may call the electric division office at (330) 343-3442 with any questions about the steps you should take before working on or around electricity sources.

You can read your meter yourself each month to help understand how and when your home uses electricity.

DO NOT TOUCH or tamper with your electric meter. To read your meter, you'll see a series of numbers that look much like your car's odometer. You can read these numerals from left to right, just as you see them. To find out approximately how much electricity you have used since your last reading, deduct the previous reading from the current reading. You can then use Dover's rate schedule to approximately determine the cost of electricity. Remember to include the customer charge and the current fuel adjustment charge. The fuel adjustment charge is multiplied times the number of kWh used.

To prevent serious injury or power outages, you should know where all utility lines running to your house are located. The Electric Field Division can show you where these lines are located before you start digging. Please call at least 48 hours in advance so that a member of the Electric Field Division can come to your home and locate underground power lines.

Call the Utility Office between the hours of 7:45 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at (330) 343-6542.

Yes, however a 10-foot clearance in all directions is required from the transformer. You can locate plants closer to the enclosure, but the Electric Division reserves the right to trim or cut down plants in order to gain safe and prompt access to the enclosure.

Before digging, please call the Ohio Utilities Protection Service at (800) 362-2764 or the Electric Field Division Office at (330) 343-6542.

Trimming and tree removal is part of regular maintenance that help us provide better electrical service. You should not attempt to trim or remove trees around power lines. For tree trimming or removal, call the Electric Field Division Office at (330) 343-6542.

These outages occur when protective devices called a recloser, are operating. When a recloser detects an object interfering with a power line, it de-energizes the line briefly to determine if the interference is permanent or a momentary problem. If the recloser determines that the interference is temporary, the line will re-energize. If the interference is determined to be permanent, the recloser we de-energize the line. These brief outages are usually caused by wildlife, trees or lightning.

When you are calling to report an outage, hundreds of people may be calling to report the outage as well. Please be patient. We will answer your call as soon as possible. Remember, the number to call during a power outage is (330) 343-3442.
