What to Do if There is a Power Outage
During daylight hours, you might call a neighbor to ask if they are also without electricity. At night, look out the window. Are others on your street experiencing an outage? Are streetlights on or off? If it is evident that there is a problem beyond your own home, you can call the electric generating plant at (330) 343-3442 to report the outage. You can also call the Utility Office (8:00 AM to 4:30 PM) at (330) 343-7725, or the Service Director's office at (330) 343-6725. If you are unable to reach the electric plant because of a busy signal, chances are one of your neighbors has already informed them of the outage. In any case, crews will remedy the situation as quickly as possible.
Be Safe Around Electricity
Electricity can kill or cause serious injury. Always use extreme caution around power lines. Never attempt electric work in or around your home (or anyone else's) unless you are quite certain of what you are doing. Never substitute electrical parts without being certain that the substitution is safe. If your electricity is shut off for any reason, DO NOT attempt to reconnect service yourself. To do so is not only extremely unsafe, it is also against the law.
Reading Your Own Electric Meter
You can read your meter yourself each month to help understand how your family uses electricity and when.
DO NOT TOUCH or tamper with your electric meter!
To read your meter, you'll see a series of numbers that look much like your car's odometer. You can read these numerals from left to right, just as you see them. To find out approximately how much electricity you have used since your last reading, duduct the previous reading from the current reading. You can then use Dover's rate schedule to determine approximately how much your electricity costs. Remember to include the cutomer charge and the current fuel adjustment charge. The fuel adjustment charge is multiplied times the number of kwh used.
